Water damage is one of the worst things you can experience as a homeowner. If you don’t catch excessive water in time, it can leave you with thousands of dollars in damages. Not only that, but you could be facing serious problems like mold and mildew growth that can lead to serious health concerns. It is important to know and understand the signs that are associated with water damage so that you can catch water problems before they get big in your home. JMark Inspections is here to share some of these signs so that you can be prepared in the case that water leaks in your home.

Signs of Water Damage Outside of House

It is extremely important that the ground slopes away from your home. Without a proper slope, rain and other water will slop toward the home and will end up at your foundation and eventually in your crawl space. A home inspector will always check the slope at the foundation of your home to ensure it is sloping in the right direction. Another area that should always be checked is the gutter system and downspouts. These are designed to move excess water away from your home so that it is safe even in severe weather. Other areas of concern include the roof and its condition as well as windows and doors for any separation that could lead to leaking water.

Signs of Water Damage on Ceiling, Walls & Floors

The most obvious sign of water damage in your home will be water stains on the ceiling. This is the most common sign that is noticed by homeowners in their home. Other signs of water damage may include floor boards that are showing signs of warping and curling. You may even notice that in bathroom areas that there is mold growing in the tile grout. This comes from almost constant contact with water in showers and tubs. All areas of your home that have water using appliances like dishwashers, washing machines, refrigerators and more should be checked regularly for any signs of water leaking that could be causing damage. Another common place in the home for water damage is the attic. This can happen around chimneys, roof vents and anywhere that shingles have fallen off. You should check the insulation in the attic for any signs of moisture or mold growth.
